I have a problem.
Not a terrible problem, mind you. But a problem nonetheless.
I apparently think there are approximately 47 hours in a day, and I have enough creative ideas to fill every single one of them. 😂
Does anyone else do this? You sit down to work on one perfectly reasonable little project, and somehow, before you’ve even finished your coffee, you’ve thought of three more things you absolutely must try.
❧ It Always Starts With One Little Idea ❧
Maybe I’m working on bookmarks for Rooted in Grace Prints. Then I start thinking how pretty those same illustrations would look on stationery. Or in a journal. Or maybe I should write a blog post about them. And of course, then I’ll need a picture for the blog, and something to share on Pinterest…
You see where this is going, don’t you? 😂
Or I’m in the kitchen making dinner, and I decide that this recipe deserves to be written down. Which turns into thinking about recipe cards, a recipe book, and all the other things I’d love to make for Katie’s Kitchen.
And don’t even get me started on my outfits. One pretty blouse can turn into a fashion sketch, and suddenly I’m wondering what an entire vintage-inspired journal collection would look like.
❧ I Really Do Love All These Things ❧
Here’s the funny thing: I don’t think I want fewer hobbies.
I genuinely love making things. I love books, old-fashioned paper, lace, watercolor, cozy recipes, pretty clothes, and taking a little idea and seeing what it might become. There’s something so satisfying about having an idea in your head and slowly bringing it into the world.
I think that’s why it’s so easy to get carried away. It’s not that I’m bored. It’s that I’m interested in approximately everything. 😂
But loving a lot of things doesn’t magically make the days longer.
❧ The Part I’m Still Learning ❧
Sometimes all those ideas can go from exciting to overwhelming before I even notice it happening.
I’ll look at all the things I want to finish and start feeling like I’m behind. Behind on what, exactly? My own imaginary schedule for things I invented because they sounded fun? 😂
I’m trying to remember that I don’t have to turn every little spark of inspiration into a finished project by Friday.
A project can wait. An idea can live in a notebook for a while. I can enjoy something simply because it makes me happy, without asking it to become a product, a post, or another item on a list.
And when I do have a few quiet minutes to create, I want to actually enjoy them instead of spending the whole time worrying about everything else I haven’t gotten to yet.
❧ A Little Grace for My Very Full Imagination ❧
I keep coming back to the idea that there are seasons for things. Some days there’s time to make something beautiful. Other days, the beautiful thing might be putting everything down, spending time with the people I love, or simply getting some rest.
God didn’t ask me to squeeze 47 hours of projects into a 24-hour day. That’s an expectation I’ve managed to invent all on my own. ♡
So I’m learning to hold my plans a little more loosely. To be thankful for the creativity God has given me, but also to remember that my worth isn’t measured in how much I manage to make.
The ideas will still be there tomorrow. Probably with five new ones waiting beside them. 😂
❧ Tell Me I’m Not the Only One ❧
Are you someone who has one beloved hobby that you stick with, or are you like me—with a dozen half-finished projects, an overflowing idea list, and the sudden urge to start something new?
I’d love to know what you’ve been making, reading, baking, or dreaming up lately.
With love, a little lace, and probably another new idea,
Katie ♡
