Some outfits are carefully planned.
And some outfits happen because you put on a dress, add one thing, add another thing, and suddenly you’re standing in front of the mirror thinking, Oh. Okay. This is actually really cute. 😂
This was one of those.
I started with my navy shirt dress, which I already love because it does basically everything I want a dress to do. It has the little collar and buttons that make it feel polished enough for work, but then it comes in at the waist and opens into this big, swishy skirt.
And can we talk about how ridiculously easy this dress is? It’s one of those pieces I can just throw on and immediately look like I made an effort, even though I absolutely did not. 😂 It’s comfortable, easy to move around in, pretty all by itself, and somehow still feels put-together enough for work. And—most importantly—IT HAS POCKETS. Actual useful pockets. Which obviously makes an already good dress approximately 47% better.
Very sensible office lady from the waist up.
Very I may dramatically walk down a hallway for absolutely no reason from the waist down.
❧ Then I Added the Velvet ❧
The black velvet fringed shawl was what changed the whole outfit.
It has this subtle floral pattern in the velvet and long black fringe, so over the navy dress it made everything feel a little darker, softer, and more romantic.
Which, considering we have officially crossed into November, felt pretty perfect.
I like that I can wear the dress completely on its own and it looks classic and feminine, but throwing the velvet over it gives it an entirely different personality without actually changing much.
And yes, the fringe moves when I walk.
Obviously that matters. 😂
❧ The Bows Were Not an Accident ❧
I apparently decided one bow was not enough today.
My hair is pulled back with a big black lace bow, with most of my hair left long underneath it. I love the way the black lace looks against my auburn hair, especially from the back.
Then I added my little silver bow earrings, because apparently once I commit to a theme, we’re committing.
They’re tiny compared to the hair bow, so it doesn’t feel like BOWS EVERYWHERE.
At least that’s what I’m telling myself. 🎀
I finished everything with my black heeled Mary Janes, which were pretty much inevitable. A full-skirted shirt dress and Mary Janes belong together.
I don’t make the rules.

❧ A Little Lace, A Lot of Style ❧
There isn’t anything particularly complicated about this outfit, and I think that’s part of why I like it so much.
It’s basically one really good navy dress, a dramatic layer, pretty shoes, and a couple of bows.
But it feels like me.
Feminine and a little old-fashioned. Appropriate enough for an ordinary day, but with just enough lace, velvet, fringe, and ridiculous swishiness to make getting dressed more fun.
And really, I think normal days deserve pretty outfits too. 🤍
Today’s outfit: navy button-front shirt dress, black velvet fringed shawl, black heeled Mary Janes, silver bow earrings, and a big black lace hair bow.
Would you wear the navy dress by itself, or are you on Team Dramatic Velvet Fringe? Because I think we all know which team I’m on. 😂
